JEE Main Exam - Everything You Need to Know

Overview, Eligibility, Syllabus, Preparation Tips, and More

Eligibility Rules for JEE Main 2026

Thinking about appearing for JEE Main 2026? Before you register, it’s important to understand whether you fit the eligibility criteria set by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Let’s break it down in a simple and crystal-clear way.

Who Can Write the Exam?

✔️ You should have cleared (or be appearing in) your Class 12 / Higher Secondary exam from a recognised board
✔️ Your subject combination must include Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Without these three, you cannot sit for JEE Main
✔️ Equivalent qualifications (like state boards, NIOS, or international boards) are also accepted, as long as PCM subjects are part of the curriculum

Age Limit Clarification

Unlike many other competitive exams, NTA has not set any upper age bar for JEE Main. Whether you completed Class 12 this year or a few years ago, you can still apply if you meet the academic conditions. (Do note: individual colleges may have their own age rules.)

Number of Attempts

Candidates can attempt JEE Main twice in the same year (Session 1 and Session 2). The better score will be counted for ranking. Across years, you must have passed Class 12 in the current year or the two previous years.

Why Eligibility Matters

Meeting these conditions ensures every aspirant has the right academic foundation for engineering. Missing even one requirement (like PCM subjects) makes you ineligible, no matter how strong your preparation is.

Quick Recap
